What We’re Watching:
NBA: The Knicks try to stave off elimination again as they head to Indianapolis for Game 6 against the Pacers on Saturday night. Tip is at 8pm EST on TNT/Max
NHL: Conner McDavid may have touched the cup, but the Edmonton Oilers are headed to the Stanley Cup Finals for a rematch with the Florida Panthers. Last season’s cup final went down in history, as the Oilers forced a Game 7 and almost came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup. Puck drop for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final will be on Wednesday.
MLB: Speaking of rematches, my eyes will be glued to this weekend’s World Series rematch between the Yankees and Dodgers in LA. Aaron Judge has been on a tear this season and is currently batting .391, has hit 18 home runs, and has a 1.227 OPS.
WNBA: The W’s in-season tournament, the Commissioner’s Cup, kicks off this weekend. Last year’s winner, the Minnesota Lynx, are currently 5-0 and will take on the 2-3 Golden State Valkyries.
Soccer: The Champions League final kicks off Saturday at 3pm EST on CBS/Paramount+. Favorites PSG will take on Inter Milan in what will be the first competitive match between the two since the 2016 (now abolished) International Champions Cup.
F1: Formula 1 concludes its European triple header this weekend in Spain, with the Driver’s Championship as tight as ever after Lando Norris’ Monaco win last week.
Sports Business:
Let’s take a look at some of the news from NCAA sports this week.
NCAA President Charlie Baker seems to be strongly in favor of expanding the tournament. If Baker is to be believed, we could have 72 or 76 teams in next year’s NCAA Tournament.
On the football side of things, we have more arguments about scheduling as Texas and Ohio State go back and forth.
And best of all, we have SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey doing press again. Sankey is intent, it seems, on dismantling the power structure of college football.
International Sports:
Three sporting events lead a European sports-heavy weekend.
Champions League Final: As previously mentioned, PSG and Inter Milan will face off in this weekend’s Champions League Final. PSG took down Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate to advance to the final, while Inter defeated Barcelona 7-6 in added extra time of the 2nd leg.
French Open: One of tennis’ four majors is underway at Roland Garros, with the third round currently in progress. No. 1 seed Janik Sinner will be in action tomorrow at 6:30am, while women’s No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka is back in action on June 1st.
Spanish GP: Only three points separate McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, with Max Verstappen only 22 points behind Norris in second. McLaren needs to be careful if it wants to continue building on their lead. An interesting note to add: since 2016, the Spanish Grand Prix has only been won by two drivers - Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
Culture & Entertainment:
Is anything more entertaining than Timothee Chalamet courtside at Knicks games right now?
Jalen Brunson giving Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order: SVU a hug after every win might be up there.
