What We’re Watching:
NBA: The second round of the NBA Playoffs, unlike a few matchups in the first, has been wildly entertaining. The Knicks either win on last-second heroics or get blown out, the Warriors are Steph-less but still fighting, Tyrese Haliburton is proving why he’s not the most overrated player in the NBA, and despite firing their coach shortly before the playoffs, the Nuggets are tied 2-2 with the Thunder. Playoff action continues tonight with the Celtics in New York for Game 4 at 7:30pm EST, and the T-Wolves take on the Warriors at 10pm EST.
On top of all that Shams Charania reported this morning that Giannis is open to the idea of leaving the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason. Do you think he will, and if so, where should he go?
NHL: The Stanley Cup playoffs roll on as well. Carolina leads Washington in their series 2-1. Edmonton will be looking for a Game 4 win against Vegas tonight after giving up a last-second goal to lose Game 3. Dallas seeks to extend their lead over the Presidents’ Cup winning Jets, and the Panthers and Leafs are tied up at two games apiece.
MLB: I normally would focus solely on good teams, but we have to talk about the Rockies. Through 40 games this season they are 7-33. SEVEN AND THIRTY THREE. They currently sit 19.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, and maybe even crazier, they sit 13.5 games behind the 4th place D-Backs. Their current projected win total for the season has already been reached by the Dodgers, Padres, Mets, and Tigers. It was the Athletics in 2023, the White Sox last year, and now the Rockies have everyone asking - how do we fix parity in the MLB?
UFC: A new Welterweight champion was crowned this weekend in Montreal, as Jack Della Maddalena dethroned Belal Muhammad in a five-round classic. Valentina Shevchenko defeated Manon Fiorot to retain the women’s flyweight belt in another five-round decision.
Golf: It’s time for another major. The PGA Championship kicks off Thursday from Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. Last year’s winner, Xander Schauffele, has struggled a bit this year, only recording one top ten finish. That being said, that top ten was at the Masters, so surely he’ll be fine.
F1: The European triple header kicks off this weekend for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, followed by Monaco in two weeks, and the Spanish GP in Barcelona following that.
Sports Business: The VC boom in sports tech
We all know about the influx of money into sports over the last few years. Whether it be new franchise owners breathing life into mediocre franchises, the Saudi PIF fund, or TKO purchasing IMG - the influx of money rivals the likes of what we’ve ever seen in sports.
I implore you to check out this report from Drake Star regarding the trends of new money entering the sports industry. Check it out HERE.
International Sports: Barcelona downs Madrid for the 4th time this season
A thriller in El Clasico on Sunday as Barca storms back from down 2-0 to beat Madrid 4-3. While Mbappe was lights out again, scoring all three Madrid goals, two goals from Raphinha and another from 17-year old Lamine Yamal put Barca on top. They now sit only one win away from the LaLiga title as they have seven points on Madrid with only a few games to play.
Culture & Entertainment: This Belichick thing is getting weird
While it’s not exactly the culture or entertainment I’d normally talk about, it sure as shit is entertaining to watch. By now, everyone likely knows how Bill Belichick is dating Jordan Hudson - a 24 year old who’s essentially running the UNC football program. While I may be embellishing a little, she certainly is trying to at least run Belichick’s life. A few weeks ago the weird CBS interview came out, this weekend Belichick was at Hudson’s Miss Maine pageant, who knows what’s next. At the end of the day they’re both adults and should certainly be allowed to do what they want. At some point, however, it feels like someone needs to step in and knock some sense into Belichick, who many believe to be the greatest NFL coach of all time.
BREAKING NEWS: NBC announced this morning that Michael Jordan will be a special correspondent for their basketball coverage, which starts in the fall after a 23-year hiatus. The football GOAT (Brady) is in the booth, the hockey GOAT (Gretzky) is in the studio, and now the basketball GOAT will be entering the media landscape as well.
