Turns out UNC may not be on Hard Knocks after all, as GM Michael Lombardi has said no deal has been agreed upon. In other entertainment news, and for my younger audience, as it turns out, London Tipton knows ball. And in Sports Business, a new boxing venture enters the fold. Check it all out below!
What We’re Watching:
UFC 313: Alex “Poatan” Pereira is back in the ring this weekend with the light heavyweight title on the line. Poatan enters the octagon for his fifth straight title fight and seventh in his last eight fights. Since moving up to light heavyweight Poatan has dominated, but he’ll face his toughest test yet in Ankalaev. Tune in to the main card at 10pm EST on ESPN+ PPV.
NCAA Basketball: The men end the regular season with conference tournament seeding on the line. The highlights: (6) St. Johns vs (20) Marquette, (19) Kentucky vs (15) Missouri, and (7) Alabama vs (1) Auburn. Unlike ESPN, I won’t highlight (2) Duke vs UNC as the Tar Heels are irrelevant this year.
NCAAW Basketball: The women round out conference tournament play with P4 action across the weekend, culminating with most conference championship games taking place Sunday.
NBA: Could this be a potential NBA Finals preview? The Lakers head to TD Garden to take on the Celtics Saturday night in primetime. The Lakeshow has won eight straight games, and Luka Doncic is averaging 23.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 8.1 assists since his move to LA.
NHL: On Saturday, the Boston Bruins head to Tampa Bay to take on the Lightning at 3pm EST on ABC/ESPN+.
Soccer: While they’ve been bad this season, when Man U and Arsenal play, it has to be highlighted. The two will clash at Old Trafford on Sunday at 12:30pm EST, you can stream on NBC/Peacock.
Sports Business: A busy week in sports biz
A lot of news from the sports business realm this week. On Wednesday, UFC CEO Dana White and WWE CEO Nick Khan announced a new boxing venture being backed by their parent company, TKO. The sport has lost its luster over the past few decades, and White wants to tear it down and build it up again.
In other news, Formula 1 announced this week that the Las Vegas Grand Prix generated $934 million in revenue. The event raised $45m in taxes, $15.5m of which will go to schools across the state of Nevada. The race, which is the only one that sees F1 act as promoter and host as opposed to a private organizing committee, had 56.1 million global viewers.
Finally, Fanatics and Ticketmaster are teaming up. As part of the deal, Fanatics will make its long-awaited push into ticketing, while Ticketmaster will now sell merch. Sure, why not?
International Sports: Taylor vs Serrano 3
After two close fights, both won by Katie Taylor, the trilogy with Amanda Serrano is on. The event, put on by Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, will be held at Madison Square Garden, which served as the location for the first fight in the trilogy. After streaming Taylor vs Serrano 2 as the co-main to Paul vs Tyson in November, Netflix will once again air the fight on July 11th.

Culture & Entertainment: London Tipton knows ball
What you’ve all been waiting for, an explanation of what the hell I’m talking about. Growing up in the 2000s, there was a popular show on Disney Channel called “Suite Life of Zack and Cody” which later transitioned to “The Suite Life on Deck”. On the show, there was a popular character named London Tipton played by Brenda Song, who’s now married to the kid from Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin.
What’s funny about this is that Tipton was your prototypical spoiled rich girl. Daddy paid for everything, she always got what she wanted, the bellman was essentially her butler, etc. Well, when I saw this clip yesterday, I was floored.
Shoutout to Mythical Kitchen for one of my favorite clips of the year.
